About Me

I studied fine art at Falmouth Art College and went on to become Head of Art at Kingshill School. Now I work as a full time professional artist from my studio at the New Brewery Arts in Cirencester. Being open to the public I enjoy daily interaction with my customers and I sell a wide range of originals, prints, and cards from here, online, and through various galleries in the South West.

My work is varied, portraying local street scenes, seascapes, harbour views and still life in both acrylic and oils.

In my Landscape work I choose subjects that are familiar to me and hold a great deal of visual excitement. I love to experiment with use of collage, mixed media and spontaneous mark making processes. Spraying, splashing, sponging and sgraffito are some of the methods I use in order to capture a sense of movement and harmony.

My Mixed media Sill life is inspired by my ever growing collection of vintage ceramics and contemporary vessels together with flowers and foliage from my garden and the local countryside. I  often add fruits, birds or fish. My intention is a quirky composition and a balance of pattern and colour. I sometimes add collage in the form of cuttings from old cookery books or seed packets and the whole piece is built up in layers of acrylic.

Over the past couple of years garden birds have been a great source of interest as a subject for me. I enjoy portraying them using an ‘Alle Prima’ oil painting technique over an acrylic ground. Working on a 6 or 8” panel I like to paint the birds approximately life size, trying to capture something of their character and form in a minimal amount of loose but carefully placed brush strokes.

My ‘Alle Prima’ technique is also used in my ‘still life in Oils’ series, painted both very small and large scale. Subjects include metallic vessels, ceramics, and glassware, combined with fruit and flora, all painted directly from life. Composition is all important to me as is the negative space between the objects. Lines of interest enter and leave the painted surface to give a feeling of freshness and the colour is a balance of subtle monochrome greys and intense pops of brightness.

I hope you will enjoy browsing through the work on my website. I also put new work on instagram. Please do contact me if you are interested in any pieces or would like to make a commission.
